2D and 3D mammograms represent the two main forms of breast cancer screening and diagnostic tools used by caregivers to identify breast cancer. 2D remains the standard screening technology, while 3D offers further diagnostic benefits for some women.
2D mammograms are the standard in terms of breast cancer screenings, helping caregivers identify abnormalities in the breast tissue for early detection of breast cancer. Our 2D mammograms produce high-quality digital images of each breast using X-ray imaging technology. Through the use of computer aided detection (CAD) software, mammography radiologists analyze the images to identify cancer or suspicious areas that may require further analysis in the form of a biopsy or additional testing.
As the name suggests, 3D mammograms created three dimensional digital images of each breast. By analyzing the different layers of breast tissue from more angles, mammography radiologists can determine whether a suspicious abnormality is cancerous or not.
Although the two methods differ, digital 2D mammograms remain the standard for breast screening care for most women. It is recommended that most women get a mammogram every year once they reach the age of 40.
Earlier this year, Columbus Community Hospital was designated as a Mammography Accredited Facility by the American College of Radiology. This prestigious accreditation speaks to our excellent mammography services managed by our experienced and highly-qualified staff, as well as our dedication to providing excellent cancer screenings.
